Employees and workers of the Yemen Arabian Sea Ports Corporation (YASPC) held a mass solidarity rally on Monday morning in front of the Port of Mukalla, demanding the immediate release of the corporation’s Chairman, Eng. Salim Ali Basamer.
Eng. Basamer was reportedly kidnapped last Thursday, January 1, 2026. Protesters gathered outside the port’s main gate, chanting "Freedom for Engineer Salim Basamer" and calling for urgent government action.
The rally, held on January 5, saw broad participation from the YASPC Workers’ Union, the Mukalla Port Stevedores’ Union, and personnel from various government entities operating within the port, most notably the General Authority for Maritime Affairs in Hadramout.
In a strongly-worded statement, participants condemned the kidnapping as a "heinous crime" and a "grave violation of security and stability." They warned that such acts undermine the working environment and the integrity of public institutions.
The protesters called upon the security forces and the local authorities in Hadramout Governorate to launch an immediate investigation to uncover the circumstances of the abduction and ensure Eng. Basamer’s safe return to his family and colleagues.
